May 19, 2009: Unsub Confirmation Emails: Yay or Nay?

From: CB2: Unsubscribe Request
Subject Line: CB2
Date: Tuesday, May 19, 2009

Unsubscribe verification emails: good idea, or "too much" when a subscriber's request is already confirmed on a landing page at the end of the opt-out process? I'm interested in your input.

Comments

Too much. Odds are if you're motivated enough to unsubscribe you're probably not going to happy to see another email, especially if they're going to be smarmy about it.

I agree with Stephen. This email is just asking for complaints. I understand that CB2 is attempting to get that final touch to get lost subscribers to shop, but this is not the place to do that. I would save all this and the "Shop CB2" and the "tell us why you're leaving" for the unsubscribe landing page. Once a subscriber is done, you have to let them go.

As both someone who works in email marketing and a recent CB2 unsubscriber who received this email, I can definitely say it's too much. I was very annoyed and considered lodging a spam complaint based on this mailing, which was clearly and intentionally sent after I unsubscribed from all CB2 communications.

The email you've shown in your example doesn't appear to be a verification email. I would expect a verification email would ask for confirmation of your intention. The example you're using appears to be an 'after the fact' last-ditch marketing email.

Having said that, as an unsubscriber I wouldn't be too worried about going through a verification process to opt out - especially if I was using a 'shared' email address (it does happen).

I would object to yet another marketing email (like the one in your example) when I had just unsubscribed.

I agree with Stephen and Kelly - definitely too much. If I am going to opt-out I don't want to get further notice. Perhaps I MIGHT agree to take part in some kind of poll, if you want to ask me why I'm not interested in your newsletter any more - but only if it wouldn't last more than one or two minutes.
